Duffusing:

When you diffuse Young Living Essential oils, you are inhaling and processing them directly through the olfactory system, which then sends therapeutic benefits of the oil to the brain. A diffuser will take an essential oil and break it down into micro molecules and project them into the air. I have read some of THE MOST amazing testimonials of the benefits people receive while diffusing essential oils. Studies have shown that when diffusing certain oils you may experience relaxation, alertness, motivation…the list goes on.

There were some studies done at Weber State University showing the killing power of thieves blend against airborne microorganisms. One study showed a 90% reduction in the number of gram positive Micrococcus luteus organisms after diffusing for 12 minutes. After 20 minutes of diffusing, the kill rate jumped to 99.3%. Another study against gram negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed a kill rate of 99.96% after just 12 minutes of diffusion. Ummm, HELLO, someone go get me a diffuser and thieves, I am a teacher and have three children, I totally need me some of that.

Keep reading in the link below for more information on all three methods.

Topical:

Your skin is the largest organ of your body. Crazy, huh? So this is a great way to use essential oils. Applying to your skin. I personally apply essential oils on my temples, forehead, wrists, behind ears, back of my neck, my stomach for digestive issues, and on my feet. When I have back pain, I apply there. When I feel a cough coming on, I apply on my chest. when my allergies bother me, I apply behind my ears, back of my neck, my wrists and sometimes my feet and temple.  When I have a migraine, I apply to the back of my neck, temple, wrists and spine.  Obviously I don’t apply to all of those places at one time, usually 1-4 drops on one area will do the trick.

Some oils can be applied “neat”. That does not mean in a non-sloppy manner…it means you can apply it straight to the skin without diluting with a carrier oil. You drip some drops in your hand and apply straight to your skin. However, some essential oils are suggested to mix with a carrier oil. I typically use grapeseed oil, almond oil or coconut oil as my carrier oils. Each have different qualities, but all will work for any carrier you would need. You can purchase these at natural/organic stores in the “cooking” section or the beauty section. You can usually get it much cheaper in the cooking section.  Please note: The kind in the beauty section you can NOT ingest, cooking section, you can! You always want to make sure there is NOTHING added to it, 100% pure.   Many of my friends use straight olive oil for ingesting.

It will tell you on the essential oil bottle the ratio you will need to use (remember those from math class)…example 1:1.  So one drop of oil to one drop of carrier oil. Or like on peppermint it will say 1 drop of peppermint to 4 drops of carrier oil. It’s always good also to test a small spot of your skin to make sure you handle it okay. You also need to realize that many of our lotions and beauty products contain toxins…GASP…I know. Well, the oils may react with toxins and sometimes you will see a flair up…just keep that in mind. It’s not really the oil you may have a reaction to, but the toxins from your beauty supplies it is reacting with.

I purchased a little glass bottle dropper to keep my carrier oil in. It is perfect because it allows me to get precise drops.  I sometimes also use a dropper from the essential oil bottle.

I simply pour my carrier oil in this bottle and it stays in my bag of oils for when I need to use a carrier oil, or add to my capsules, which I will talk about that  next.

When it is a recipe that is truly working, I will mix in a roller bottle and have it handy to apply/roll on to the flex points.

I get asked a LOT, do I pre-mix my oils that need carrier oils. Only the ones that I use all of the time!  The others, NO, essential oils stay good forever…carrier oils can go bad over time. So, for ones I am unsure about, I just keep my carrier oil separate and use when needed. If I need to dilute 4 to 1. I will drop 4 drops of carrier oil in my hand, then one drop of essential oil in my hand, then apply.

How to use the oils:

Ingesting:

You can put the essential oils in your water. The lemon and orange are my FAVORITE oils to put in water. You need to always use a GLASS when doing this. Remember, oils will attack the toxins…plastic and such have toxins. You MUST use glass.

I also put lemon and orange in my tea. Peppermint is also a great addition to hot tea or water…but trust me, you will only want to use one drop. It’s strong. You can add lemon and lime with some stevia to carbonated water and have a yummy drink. You can put a drop in a spoonful of honey or agave. You can put a drop on a piece of bread. We even at times will place a drop on our finger and hold on the inside of our cheek if we are feeling sick.

I personally use Thieves in tea and honey.. it is my answer when I feel anything coming on.

NOT all oils are good for ingesting, EVEN if you are using Young Living, so MAKE sure to read your bottle and Reference Guide to see IF you can ingest and HOW much to ingest.

Young Living is the only company that offers a vitality label that is FDA approved.  These are oils that are specifically labeled for ingesting. If it has a vitality label, there will be directions for ingesting.

Finally, you can ingest by using vegetable capsules. This is seriously the easiest way and some do this daily. You want the size 00. It comes in 0 and 00.

You can purchase these at most Natural Health Stores, Young Living and Amazon.  They are much cheaper through YL, for the same amount of capsules if you are a YL member.

These little suckers open up and you fill the oil in the larger portion of the capsule. Always refer to your bottle or your Pocket Reference Guide for the amount of essential oil you place in and the amount of carrier oil. For instance with lemon, I will put 2 drops of lemon and then fill the rest with  Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Crazy, right?

Then you just apply the smaller cap back on the capsule and swallow. You will need to take within a reasonable time after creating it, I have heard that the pill will begin to get soft. If I am going to ingest peppermint and lemon, I just put them in the same capsule and ingest.

Now that you have decided to dive into this whole “essential oil” thing, how do you use them…right? I remember when I purchased my Everyday Oils Kit…I was SO excited to receive it, but SO overwhelmed. I am pretty positive that I messaged my friend one million times with two million questions. There is no reason to get worried and overwhelmed.  The Lavender Living team is here to help!

First, I would like to state that the oils that I will make reference to are Young Living Essential Oils. I can’t vouch for other companies. Please, DO NOT ingest oils you find at health food stores. Believe me, I know there are oils out there that are cheaper than Young Living, but you better NEVER ingest them. To be honest, I am not even comfortable applying them to me topically or diffusing them aromatically.  They are NOT Therapeutic grade A quality and there is absolutely NO OTHER company that is of quality that Young Living is.

Also, if you are under the care of a physician, before using the oils, PLEASE inform them of what you are using and see if it’s okay with the plan of care they have you on. If you are pregnant or nursing, please discuss with your doctor as well.

Also, it’s good to go to your Essential Oil’s Pocket Reference to see how your oils should be used.

Now that we have that out of the way, let’s find out how to use these things. You can use essential oils in three ways. You can diffuse, apply topically, or ingest.
